Cooke & Bieler – a long only, US value equity manager with six strategies offered up and down the market capitalization spectrum.
A little more about us:
Louis Bieler founded our firm in 1949 with the mission of growing and preserving the wealth of high net worth Philadelphia families. With clients still scarred by the Great Depression, Bieler focused on buying high-quality companies, embedding in the firm a belief in the importance of fundamentals.
We are fundamental, bottom-up investors. The tenets of our investment philosophy – that fundamentals drive stock prices, capital preservation improves returns, and that culture shapes investment decisions – are deeply rooted in our history. We believe these truths are fundamental and not subject to change.
We believe our performance is strong and consistent because our decision-making process is better. We are organized to place decision-making authority with the most informed individual. Our analysts make the buy and sell decisions for the stocks they cover and are fully accountable for the results. Frequent meetings and constant dialogue mean team members are always informed about others’ research efforts and that portfolio construction is the result of thoughtful collaboration.
Underpinning this process is a carefully designed firm and robust culture of collegiality & accountability. Cooke & Bieler is privately owned, with 80% of the firm owned by active partners. Ownership is broadly spread among 15 partners, with no internal partner owning more than 15% of the firm. There is no key person risk at Cooke & Bieler.
Cooke & Bieler invests heavily outside of the Investment Team to ensure operational excellence and outstanding service for our clients. Each client is assigned one of our experienced client service professionals, all of whom are firm partners. We have committed significant resources to maintaining a modern IT infrastructure, including production elements such as our trading platform as well as our disaster recovery and cybersecurity systems/procedures. We also make continuous efforts to ensure diverse hiring pools and to provide equal opportunity in
compensation and promotion. The majority of our hiring occurs through our Associates Program, which provides opportunities for recent college graduates to gain an introduction to the investment management industry along with important skills and experience. We actively seek diversity in both our candidates and hires. Since the program’s inception, 33% of our Associates have been women and 56% have been minorities. The Associates Program and our MBA intern program are the primary avenues for professional recruitment at Cooke & Bieler and we believe are a leading indicator of diversity trends at the key professional level.
